OVERVIEW



A s lying in the centre of Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam, Vinh Long province is the unique province that has boundaries with 07 provinces and cities namely Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Dong Thap, Hau Giang, Soc Trang and Can Tho City. Vinh Long province is 136km far from Ho Chi Minh City to the north, 33km far from Can Tho city to the south. Its population is over 01 million including ethnics of Kinh, Khmer and Chinese living in an area of 1.520km2. Modern Vinh Long province, as part of the old Long Ho Dinh formed in 1732 is known as the “Scared land of the talented” that nourishing the outstanding people including the late Chairman Council of Ministers Pham Hung, late Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet and the late Professor, Academician, Hero of Labor Tran Dai Nghia.

Vinh Long Province is featured by the special geography. It is located in the Mekong Delta downstream between the Tien and Hau rivers linked by Mang Thit River from north to south. With the vast network of interlacing rivers, Vinh Long province is well known as the connecting point in the region and on the international waterway through its estuaries of Tieu, Dai, Ham Luong, Co Chien, Dinh An etc.

With such advantage, Vinh Long province keeps its significant position in the development strategy of the Mekong Delta and the southern key economic area. Moreover, Vinh Long is located Hbetween two major economic hubs of Ho Chi Minh city and Can Tho city, 43km far from the international Tra Noc - Can Tho airport. My Thuan bridge, Can Tho bridge were put into operation; Trung Luong - My Thuan highway project is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2018. Vinh Long province shall play a great role in the regional and national economic development, making the breakthrough in the domestic and foreign investment, production and business.

Its mild climate and fertile soil make Vinh Long suitable for growing rice and a variety of exotic and delicious special fruits such as 5 Roi grapefruit, orange, tangerine, mango, rambutan, durian and farming freshwater fishes of high economic value such as catfish, catfish, red tilapia,... In addition, Vinh Long has been well known for many famous traditional products such as red ceramic brick, tile, hats, embroidery and knitting, weaving,... exported to many countries, even conquering strict markets in Europe, North America etc. The province has the abundant labor source of good qualifications and skills who quickly receive the scientific and technical knowledge, advanced technology. Vinh Long people are hard working, creative and have their traditional solidarity.

In the Mekong Delta, Vinh Long province is famous for its training system of quality schools and 03 universities, 05 colleges, 01 vocational schools, 18 Center for Vocational Training and Employment Services performing the enrollment, joint training programs providing more than 26,000 employees of various qualifications from short-term, beginner to professional colleges; 4500-5000 employees of high school education, college and university. In 2014, the percentage of technical expertise reached 50.05%.

Vinh Long tourism is one of the potential service sectors thanks to the cultural, ancient historical relics, such as Van Thanh Temple, Van Xuong Shrine, Tien Chau Pagoda, Cong Than Temple etc. With the unique sceneray landscape, Vinh Long province is known as the ideal destination for both domestic and foreign tourists.
In the difficult year of 2014, Vinh Long province has achieved pretty high economic growth rate, GRDP rising 7.13% with its positively shifted economic structure in the direction of reducing proportion of agriculture while gradually increasing proportion of industry - service.
In 2014, the proportion of agriculture, forestry and fishery accounted for 33.12%, the industry - construction accounted for 20.40%, Service sector occupies 41.95% and product tax excluding product allowance of 4.53%. Per capita income (GRDP) reached 34,747 million dongs/person/year.

Taking advantages of geographical position, Vinh Long province has been making it best effort to improve the business environment to attracting investment for economic development of potential sectors and keeping its active role in coordinating with the Government to improve the transportation infrastructure in term of important projects such as Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho City highway. Moreover, the province has focused on the provincial transportation network connecting its internal routes with the national transport routes to optimize the infrastructure for the provincial development objectives.
In addition, the province has issued and realized various policies to support the investor and attract the investment in all economic sectors such as supporting investors, creating incentives to attract investment into the industrial parks, industrial complexes, supporting the traditional manufacturing sectors in rural areas; supporting investors in agricultural and rural development etc. It is especially noted that the province has performed the administrative procedure reform, focusing on transparency, strengthening the enterprise confidence in the legal institutions, improving the efficiency of method of resolving contract disputes, protecting the intellectual property rights and the enterprises legal rights etc.

It is Vinh Long motto that planning should go ahead in order to attract investment. Therefore the province has completed its master planning of socio economic development for 10 years, focusing resources and investment to accelerate the technical infrastructure construction. Up to now, there are 2 Industrial parks namely Hoa Phu Industrial Park, Binh Minh Industrial Park and Co Chien Industrial complex. The province is continuing to build infrastructure for Hoa Phu Industrial Park Phase 2 of 137,16ha. In addition, upon the provincial master planning and development orientation, there are 03 new industrial zones namely Binh Tan and Binh Dong, An Dinh and 13 industrial complexes in districts, towns and cities with a total area of 1,600 ha. The ongoing construction of the commercial and service center in Ward 2, Ward 4, Ward 8, Ward 9, Vinh Long City and other centers are expected to give more opportunities for investment in industry and services in the coming years.
